Visa Runs from Bali: 4 Destinations with Easy Entry (Part 1)

Sooner or later, almost everyone living in Bali on a visa faces a visa run. A visa run is a short trip out of Indonesia either to switch to a new visa arranged in advance, or to obtain a visa on arrival again on the way back in. The task is straightforward: fly to a neighboring country that lets you in without complications, and return to Bali with an entry permit already in hand.

We have gathered the destinations that are easiest to reach from Bali: close by, inexpensive on airfare, and without a complicated entry procedure. Part 1 covers Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Timor-Leste.

All information is current as of August 2026. Visa rules change frequently, so it is worth rechecking them before you fly, or checking with us.

How Much Time to Allow for a Visa Run

The length of the trip depends on which visa you are returning on:

  • For a visa on arrival and short-term visas, 1 to 3 days is usually enough: you fly out, come back, and enter on a fresh visa.

  • For long-term visas (work visas, for instance, and others requiring prior approval), you often need 7 to 10 days or more while the visa is being processed. A visa run like that cannot be planned as an overnight trip.

We always calculate this period in advance for the specific visa, so that a return ticket does not end up booked too tightly.

Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur)

The simplest and cheapest destination for a visa run from Bali. A direct flight, visa-free entry, and low airfares make Malaysia the default option.

  • Entry: visa-free for citizens of Russia, Belarus, and Kazakhstan, for up to 30 days.

  • Mandatory step: the free MDAC (Malaysia Digital Arrival Card). It is completed online no earlier than 3 days (72 hours) before arrival, and you show the QR code at the border.

  • Getting there: direct flights Denpasar to Kuala Lumpur, around 3 hours, dozens of flights a day, with inexpensive tickets.

  • Advantages for a visa run: you can turn it around in a single day, but Kuala Lumpur is large, so staying a night or two is more comfortable. Food and accommodation are cheaper than in Singapore.

  • Recommendation: the baseline choice if you need to exit the country quickly and return on a new visa.

One point to keep in mind: frequent back-and-forth visa runs with no real purpose for the trip may raise questions with the officer on entry. Keep your return ticket, accommodation booking, and proof of funds with you.

Singapore

Close and quick in flight time, but with a caveat: citizens of Russia, Belarus, and Kazakhstan need a Singapore visa arranged in advance. A spontaneous "fly in, fly out" visa run will not work here.

  • Entry: a visa arranged before the trip is required. The fee is S$30, and the application is not filed independently but through an accredited visa agent, a local contact, or a Singapore mission abroad. Processing takes several business days, and the length of stay is determined by the officer on entry.

  • Getting there: direct flights Denpasar to Singapore, around 2.5 hours, very frequent.

  • Advantages for a visa run: if the visa is already in hand, the flight is short and the trip is easy to combine with business. Singapore is compact, so 1 to 2 days is enough to cover everything.

  • Drawback: an expensive city and a visa that requires advance preparation, so the destination does not suit an urgent departure.

Thailand

A popular destination with good direct flights. Entry is straightforward, but the conditions differ depending on your passport.

  • Citizens of Russia: visa-free. At the time of writing, the permitted period is 60 days, although the authorities have announced a move to 30 days, so confirm the exact figure before you fly. Note separately that entry checks have been tightened and an officer may refuse entry, so keep your return ticket, booking, and proof of funds at hand.

  • Citizens of Kazakhstan: visa-free, for up to 30 days.

  • Citizens of Belarus: this is a visa on arrival rather than visa-free entry. The period is 15 days, the fee is around 2,000 baht (roughly USD 60), it cannot be extended, and it is issued in a separate queue at the airport.

  • Mandatory step: the TDAC (Thailand Digital Arrival Card), free and online, no earlier than 72 hours before arrival. Without it you will not be allowed through the border.

  • Getting there: direct flights Denpasar to Bangkok take around 4 hours 15 minutes. There is also a direct flight to Phuket, around 3 hours 45 minutes.

  • Recommendation: with a 4-hour flight, Thailand does not suit a single-day visa run. Planning 2 to 4 days works better, especially since the trip is easy to combine with a holiday.

Timor-Leste (Dili)

The classic short visa run from Bali, thanks to the shortest flight in this selection.

  • Entry: a visa on arrival at Dili airport, USD 30 in cash, for up to 30 days. The rule applies to citizens of Russia, Belarus, and Kazakhstan.

  • Important on money: the fee is accepted in cash only, and there may be no ATM or currency exchange at the airport. Bring exactly USD 30 with you, preferably in small notes.

  • Getting there: there is a direct flight Denpasar to Dili, around 2 hours. It is precisely this short hop that makes Timor a convenient visa run.

  • Advantages for a visa run: a same-day round trip is genuinely possible, but there are few flights and they run during the day, so one overnight stay is more comfortable.

  • Before you fly: an online arrival form and an electronic customs declaration have been introduced. Complete them in advance and check the current requirements on the official portal. A return ticket is requested at the visa-on-arrival desk.

Returning to Bali with a Visa Already in Hand

Wherever you fly for your visa run, what matters is returning to Bali with your Indonesian visa already arranged. Entry back into the country then goes smoothly, including through the autogate.
